25 January 2011 Speed Limiters Coming Soon? The NTSA is considering requests by the trucking industry and is looking into a rule to require manufacturers to install devices to limit heavy trucks to 68 mph. This rule could go into effect as soon as 2012. Petitions were submitted as a way to reduce speed-related crashes involving trucks. According to the NHTSA, two studies have been completed suggesting a potential that if these devices were installed, there would be decreases in "crash severity". However, these studies do not suggest a final rule will be issued. The trick now is to figure out how to make speed limiters tamper-resistant and to assure that these challenges are understood prior to enacting any rule now or in the future. |
